Pulitzer Hotel Amsterdam – the diamond of Prinsengracht
The year was 1970. Eurovision was being held in Amsterdam, Ireland would go on to be crowned winner with the song ‘All kinds of everything’ by the aritist Dana. Piet De Jong was Prime minister of the Netherlands and Queen Juliana reigned supreme. It was the year when both The Who and Simon Garfunkel played Royal Concertgebouw. Venues such as Paradiso and Melkweg were establishing themselves as creative hubs for an expanding music scene. It was also the year when a bold and innovative idea came to fruition. The idea? Converting historic canal houses into luxury boutique hotels – the brainchild of Peter Pulitzer.
Pulitzer purchased a total of 12 houses and the results were by all measures, remarkable. Pulitzer Amsterdam – the diamond on Prinsengracht and the oldest five star hotel in the city.
The canal houses once home to Dutch Aristocrats were now refurbished in the pursuit of ultimate luxury. Over three decades the number of canal cruises owned by the Pulitzer brand grew from 12 to 25. In the Summer of 2016, the Pulitzer hotel re-opened after undergoing the largest renovation in its history. Given the hotels history you have to imagine the scale of such a refurbishment. Creative Director Jacu Strauss of Lore Group led the refurbishment. The results reimagined the space – the main source of design inspiration was the history. The intention was to tell the story of the guests who may have stayed in those 25 canal houses over the past 400 years.
“The house of your neighbour is for sale only once”
Peter Pulitzer
The tranquil Pulitzer garden is a bold and big space taking a central role in the hotel. Under the lead of Strauss, renowned Dutch garden architects Copijn created a garden space fitting for 5 star luxury. The recognisable works and high standards of Horticultural presentation on display – Copijn also worked on the Rijksmuseum. A hidden gem it truly is – guests can take advantage of all that the space provides – alfresco dining perfection. The Pulitzer gardens offer an Oasis, a chance to unwind amongst beautiful sculptures and seasonal plants.
Strauss also took inspiration and influence from some of Amsterdam’s most iconic sights such as the Masters painting in Rijksmuseum, remarkable canal scenery and the detail displayed upon 17th and 18th century canal houses. ThePulitzer hotel is quintessentially Dutch – in fact, local craftsmanship is celebrated throughout the buildings. The level of attention is meticulous in the wooden Saxenberg staircases and ornate carved fireplaces.
The grand entrance to this intricate maze is lined with persian rugs and contemporary artwork fills the walls. A library showcasing Pulitzer prize winning books – prestigious awards are given to achievements made in the fields of journalism, literature and musical composition. Past winners of the Pulitzer price include writers such as Harper Lee, Margaret Mitchell and Ernest Hemingway.
The hidden neighbourhood of canal houses now boasts a total of 223 guest rooms and suites. No two rooms or suites are the same, each balances Amsterdam’s rich past and contemporary present. It has been designed to be a home away from home where guests can truly feel like a local enjoying the use of a vintage telephone and D.S & Durga amenities. Guests can expect to see tongue in cheek humour too – each room comes equipped with a Dutch life style essential – a bicycle repair kit.
The 47 metre square classic suites offer King soft beds ideal for 3 guests. With a marble bathroom, heated vanity mirror, hairdryer, amenities from D.S & Durga as standard plus your own sitting area and your own cocktail bar.
At 55 metres square, the elegant Canal suite offers picture perfect views of the canals from your own sitting room. Guests can expect to find a bathtub for relaxing in after a long day exploring. French press coffee machine, a Pulitzer umbrella and tote bag are just some of the amenities waiting for you.
The open plan Pulitzer suite offers plush surroundings and tranquil views. A signature free standing bath tub is placed in the centre of the 55 metre square space. High ceilings, double vanity sinks, garden views with bespoke vintage furniture and beautiful pieces of art decorate the room to give it an outstanding feeling.
The art collectors suite can best be described as staying in your own private art gallery. A private entrance leads to impressive canal views with a separate bedroom and living room, furnished to exceptional levels, it even includes a six meter painting from artist Thierry Bruet.
The Pulitzer Jansz. is a true modern Dutch delight– with Brasserie Ambassade and D’Vijff Vlieghen located nearby the standards for fine dining are set high however Jansz. truly delivers a wonderful culinary experience. The interior is stunning with locally sourced ingredients served up throughout the day, the passionate commitment to ingredients from the Netherlands in each dish.
